E08 — The Silent Owl — Storyboard
Mentor: Mimi (shy bunny bookworm) · Shard: Quiet · Pillar: Mind Runtime: 3:00 · Frames: 30 · Cut: 9:16 primary, 16:9 director
Episode at a glance
This is the quietest episode of the season. The negative-space episode. The grove has not moved in a thousand years and it does not move for us either. No wind. Footfalls muted to almost nothing. No music, no ambience, nothing for the first 90 seconds. When sound returns at ~01:35 it is only Dzino's chord, and the new eighth voice is not a tone but a rest — a deliberate, audible silence the listener feels the way the tongue feels a missing tooth.
Silence budget.
- 00:00 – 01:30 — total silence. Even ambience muted. The viewer's room is the soundtrack.
- 01:30 – 01:45 — first sound: Dzino's seven-voice chord, faint, growing.
- 01:45 – 02:30 — chord sustains; the rest lands as Voice 8.
- 02:30 – 03:00 — chord continues, seven-and-a-rest, fading on the long pull-back.
Stillness budget. Hold every shot one beat longer than feels right. Trust the discomfort. Voxel motion reduced to almost nothing — Dzino's blink is a single-frame switch with no anticipation. Mimi's pencil hovers but never scratches. The owl's blink is two frames only. Three filled journal pages. One empty page. The empty page becomes the shard. That is the whole thesis.
Frame-by-frame
Scene 9.1 — The grove [00:00 – 00:45]
F01 — Threshold (00:00 – 00:06)
- Composition. Wide hero, low camera. Dzino enters from screen-right at the lip of the grove. Trunks lean inward like listeners.
- Action. One step in. Pause. He registers the stillness before he sees it.
- Lighting & palette. Twilight blue-violet wash; moss-green underfoot; cream of his face the warmest thing on screen.
- Sound cue. Nothing. Cut from E07's heartbeat to total silence on the first frame.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel-fantasy twilight grove at the threshold, indigo voxel character with orange crown stepping in from the right, leaves frozen mid-air, blue-violet sky, moss-green ground, Studio Ghibli stillness, 9:16."
- Notes. Don't fade in. Cut hard. The silence is the title card.
F02 — Frozen leaf, insert (00:06 – 00:12)
- Composition. Macro insert: a single voxel maple leaf paused at 45° from a branch, mid-fall. Negative space above and below.
- Action. None. Camera locked.
- Lighting & palette. Rim of cream highlight on the leaf's spine; everything else recedes into violet.
- Sound cue. Silence.
- AI-gen prompt. "Macro voxel insert, single autumn leaf paused at 45 degrees mid-fall from a branch, twilight violet bokeh, no motion, freeze-frame, painterly voxel."
- Notes. Hold six full seconds on a static image. First dose of the discomfort.
F03 — Spiderweb still (00:12 – 00:17)
- Composition. Macro insert: a spiderweb between two ferns, every strand caught mid-vibration. No spider. Suspended dust motes that should be drifting are also frozen.
- Action. None.
- Lighting & palette. Cream threads on violet ground; one strand catches a tiny bioluminescent glint.
- Sound cue. Silence.
- AI-gen prompt. "Macro voxel spiderweb between ferns, frozen mid-vibration, no spider, suspended dust motes, twilight violet, single bioluminescent dew speck."
- Notes. If you can resist sound design here, you're directing this episode correctly.
F04 — Suspended dew (00:17 – 00:23)
- Composition. Extreme macro: fern blade running screen-bottom to screen-top. Halfway down, a single drop of dew suspended a few pixels off the blade — neither falling nor returning.
- Action. None.
- Lighting & palette. Drop refracts the violet sky into a pinprick of cream.
- Sound cue. Silence.
- AI-gen prompt. "Extreme voxel macro, single dew drop suspended mid-fall a few pixels off a fern blade, twilight refraction, no motion, frozen-time grove."
- Notes. This shot is the episode's mission statement. Hold it.
F05 — Dzino entering deeper (00:23 – 00:32)
- Composition. Medium-wide. Three slow steps. Feet touch moss but leave no print. He is the only thing moving.
- Action. He doesn't look up. He's listening with his body before he knows he is.
- Lighting & palette. Twilight blue-violet, moss-green; Dzino's indigo and cream slightly muted by shade.
- Sound cue. Silence. Not even footfall — moss eats it.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel character walking carefully through a frozen twilight grove, three slow steps, no leaves stirring, no shadow movement, painterly voxel."
- Notes. Animator: ten frames of walk cycle, not the usual sixteen. Slightly under-animate.
F06 — Wide pause (00:32 – 00:45)
- Composition. Wide hero. Dzino stops. Low branch with the owl shape visible in soft focus far ahead.
- Action. Dzino tilts his head a fraction. That is all the motion in thirteen seconds.
- Lighting & palette. A faint pulse of cooler violet may roll across the back of the grove — the only environmental motion in the episode, and it is light, not matter. Optional; cut if too much.
- Sound cue. Silence.
- AI-gen prompt. "Wide voxel grove, deep twilight, indigo voxel character standing still at center-left, distant owl shape on a low branch in soft focus, no motion, painterly Ghibli stillness."
- Notes. Hardest hold of the cold open. Don't cheat it with score.
Scene 9.2 — Owl and Mimi [00:45 – 01:30]
F07 — Reveal: the owl (00:45 – 00:53)
- Composition. Slow rack from soft to sharp on the owl: small voxel owl, perfectly still on a low branch.
- Action. The owl blinks once — two-frame transition, no anticipation.
- Lighting & palette. Owl is silvered violet against a cooler background. Eyes: faint bioluminescent cream — the only glow in the grove.
- Sound cue. Silence.
- AI-gen prompt. "Small voxel owl on a low branch, painterly, perfectly still, large bioluminescent cream eyes, twilight violet background, blink mid-frame."
- Notes. The blink is punctuation, not animation.
F08 — Reveal: Mimi (00:53 – 01:02)
- Composition. Tilt down from owl to Mimi, cross-legged on moss directly beneath the branch. Half a journal open in one paw, pencil tucked behind ear, second pencil poised above the page.
- Action. She doesn't notice Dzino yet. Looking up at the owl, brow furrowed.
- Lighting & palette. Moss-green; her fur soft cream-pink; journal pages cream — almost the only bright surface in shot.
- Sound cue. Silence.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel shy bunny scholar cross-legged on moss beneath an owl's branch, journal open in one paw, pencil behind ear, second pencil hovering, twilight grove, painterly Ghibli."
- Notes. Mimi: studious, soft, slightly hunched. Round glasses optional but on-brand.
F09 — Insert: failed translation pages (01:02 – 01:12)
- Composition. Top-down on the journal. Three filled pages visible. Dots and dashes in columns. Handwriting starts neat on page one and decays into desperation by page three — letters crossed out, columns abandoned mid-row, a scribble at the bottom.
- Action. None. Mimi's paw and pencil at frame-edge, motionless.
- Lighting & palette. Cream paper, graphite-grey marks, a single pencil-shaving on the spine.
- Sound cue. Silence.
- AI-gen prompt. "Top-down voxel insert of an open journal, three pages of dots and dashes in columns, handwriting progressively more desperate, crossed-out lines, scribbled corner, cream paper, graphite, twilight ambient."
- Notes. Morse-adjacent but never resolving — viewer must briefly try to read, then give up. That trying-then-giving-up is the whole feeling.
F10 — Mimi notices Dzino (01:12 – 01:18)
- Composition. Two-shot, eye-level: Mimi foreground, Dzino half a body-length behind her. She's just glanced over her shoulder.
- Action. Ears twitch — first organic motion since the cold open. Single paw to mouth: shh.
- Lighting & palette. Same. A single pixel of cream moves with the ear-twitch.
- Sound cue. Silence. The shh is mimed; we do not hear it.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel bunny on moss looking back over shoulder at indigo voxel character, finger raised to mouth in shh gesture, twilight grove, painterly."
- Notes. The ear-twitch is the first motion in the grove other than Dzino. It needs to land.
F11 — Pat the moss (01:18 – 01:24)
- Composition. Same two-shot, slight push-in. Mimi pats the moss beside her, twice, soundlessly.
- Action. Two pats. Dzino takes a step. Sits.
- Lighting & palette. Same.
- Sound cue. Silence. Pats produce no sound — moss eats them.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel bunny patting moss beside her in invitation, indigo voxel character about to sit, soundless gesture, twilight grove."
- Notes. A hand-shape, not an impact.
F12 — Owl's deliberate blink-pattern (01:24 – 01:30)
- Composition. Tight on the owl's face. Eyes dominate frame.
- Action. Pattern: short — short — long — short — long — long — short. Slow, deliberate, with rhythm. Each blink two frames; the gaps timed like syllables.
- Lighting & palette. Owl's eyes glow cream when open; pure silvered violet when closed. Reads like a small lighthouse.
- Sound cue. Silence. The rhythm is visual only — audience starts to feel a beat with no audio carrying it.
- AI-gen prompt. "Tight voxel close-up on owl face with bioluminescent cream eyes, deliberate slow blink pattern visible against twilight violet, painterly, no motion blur."
- Notes. Storyboard the rhythm on a click track in edit even though the click track is muted in final mix. Same pattern Dzino later "hears."
Scene 9.3 — Listening with sound [01:30 – 02:30]
F13 — Mimi's pencil hovers (01:30 – 01:36)
- Composition. Profile two-shot of Mimi and Dzino, owl visible above, slightly out of focus.
- Action. Pencil hovers, trembles. She frowns. Lowers the pencil — slowly, deliberately — to rest on the journal without writing.
- Lighting & palette. Same. The pencil tip is the sharpest point in frame.
- Sound cue. Silence — last beat of total silence in the episode.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel bunny lowering a pencil to rest on a journal without writing, frown, defeated posture, painterly twilight grove."
- Notes. Hold on the pencil-down for one extra beat. The defeat is the door opening.
F14 — The apologetic look (01:36 – 01:42)
- Composition. Singles cut: Mimi looking at Dzino. Dzino looking at Mimi.
- Action. Eyes meet. Her mouth moves slightly — I can't. No sound.
- Lighting & palette. Same. A faint warm tint enters Dzino's cream face — the chord is about to start.
- Sound cue. First whisper of the seven-voice chord begins under the cut, far below threshold. Almost subliminal.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel bunny giving an apologetic look to indigo voxel character, mouth shape of 'I can't' with no sound, intimate twilight two-shot."
- Notes. The chord is fading in here, but it is Dzino's and lives inside his chest, not in the grove.
F15 — Dzino closes his eyes (01:42 – 01:50)
- Composition. Tight close-up on Dzino's face, three-quarter angle.
- Action. Two-frame eye-close. Held. He doesn't lower his head — just lets his ears take over.
- Lighting & palette. A faint cream glow rises in his chest — the chord made visible in light. Background falls another half-stop into violet.
- Sound cue. Seven-voice chord becomes audible. Faint, clean, chiptune. No percussion.
- AI-gen prompt. "Tight voxel close-up of indigo character with eyes gently closed, faint cream glow in chest, twilight violet background, painterly stillness."
- Notes. First proper sound the audience has heard in 100 seconds. Mix it low. Let them lean in.
F16 — The blinks become rhythm (01:50 – 02:00)
- Composition. Split focus: owl in soft background, Dzino's closed-eye profile foreground. Between them, an audio-reactive overlay — a soft cream sine breathing in time with the blinks.
- Action. The owl blinks the F12 pattern. The waveform pulses with each blink. Visual only — chord underneath unchanged.
- Lighting & palette. Cream waveform on violet. The grove darkens slightly to push the waveform forward.
- Sound cue. Chord sustains. Blinks themselves still produce no sound. The rhythm is heard through sight.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel scene with soft-focus owl blinking, indigo character in profile with eyes closed, cream sine waveform connecting them, audio-reactive overlay, painterly twilight."
- Notes. Critical: do not add a tone per blink. The blinks remain silent. The waveform is Dzino's interpretation, drawn for the viewer.
F17 — The rhythm has shape (02:00 – 02:08)
- Composition. The waveform resolves into a typographic shape — a question mark held in cream pixels for two beats, then dissolves back to wave.
- Action. Forms, holds, dissolves.
- Lighting & palette. Cream on violet. The brightest object so far besides the owl's eyes.
- Sound cue. Chord sustains.
- AI-gen prompt. "Cream pixel waveform resolving into the shape of a question mark in mid-air between voxel owl and indigo voxel character, twilight grove, painterly."
- Notes. Two beats only. Don't linger — let the audience catch it like a thought.
F18 — Subtitle: the question (02:08 – 02:16)
- Composition. Wide-ish two-shot of Dzino and Mimi at the base of the tree, owl above. Lower-third subtitle in cream.
- Action. Subtitle fades in: "What do you not need to say?" No voiceover. The subtitle is the entire delivery.
- Lighting & palette. Same. Standard cream subtitle font, slightly larger than usual to honor the moment.
- Sound cue. Chord sustains. No voice.
- AI-gen prompt. "Wide voxel two-shot of indigo character and bunny seated under a still owl, subtitle 'What do you not need to say?' in cream lower-third, twilight grove, painterly."
- Notes. Dub spec: this line is not voiced, ever, in any locale. Subtitle only. Canon.
F19 — Dzino offers nothing (02:16 – 02:24)
- Composition. Same two-shot, slight push-in on Dzino.
- Action. Eyes open. He does not move. He does not nod. He does not reply. Offers — nothing. Held for a long beat.
- Lighting & palette. A second faint glow joins the first in his chest — the space where Voice 8 will sit, currently empty.
- Sound cue. Chord sustains. There is now a gap in the chord where Voice 8 should be — the listener feels the missing tooth.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel indigo character with eyes open, completely still, offering no reply, faint cream glow in chest with a darker negative-space hollow inside it, twilight grove."
- Notes. The "rest" begins here as a perceived absence, not a played note.
F20 — The owl bows (02:24 – 02:30)
- Composition. Tight on the owl. Mimi's blurred shoulder in the corner of frame for scale.
- Action. Head tilts down, slow, deliberate. A bow. Then holds.
- Lighting & palette. Cream eyes briefly close as it bows; reopen at a lower angle.
- Sound cue. Chord sustains, the rest now named by Dzino's stillness.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel owl bowing its head slowly toward indigo character below, eyes briefly closing, twilight violet, painterly Ghibli."
- Notes. The bow is the only character animation in the episode beyond Mimi's gestures and Dzino's three steps. Earn it.
Scene 9.4 — The page [02:30 – 03:00]
F21 — Shard rises as an empty page (02:30 – 02:38)
- Composition. Center-frame hero. Between Dzino and Mimi, low to the moss, the shard Quiet rises — not glowing crystal, not glyph: a clean cream rectangle, the proportions of a torn journal page. No glow. No particles. Paper.
- Action. Rises a hand's-breadth. Holds. Rotates a degree or two — enough to read it as an object.
- Lighting & palette. Pure cream against twilight violet. The brightest matter in the episode.
- Sound cue. Chord shifts: seven voices part to make space for the eighth. The eighth is a rest — a held silence inside the chord, geometrically placed where a tone would go. The chord hollows out by exactly one voice.
- AI-gen prompt. "Cream rectangular shard the shape of a torn journal page rising slowly between an indigo voxel character and a bunny on moss, no glow, pure paper, twilight violet, painterly."
- Notes. Resist every instinct to add particles or shimmer. This shard is anti-spectacle.
F22 — Shard clicks into chest (02:38 – 02:44)
- Composition. Tight on Dzino's chest. The page-shard floats in slim-side first and slots flush.
- Action. Single-frame click. No flash. The cream rectangle becomes a small flat plane embedded in the indigo, visible as a notch of cream.
- Lighting & palette. Indigo and cream only. The chest glow from F19 now contains a tangible cream shape inside it.
- Sound cue. No click sound. Only the chord, and within the chord the rest — Voice 8 has arrived, and Voice 8 is silence in its proper place in the harmony.
- AI-gen prompt. "Tight voxel close-up of indigo chest receiving a thin cream rectangular shard slotting in flush, no flash, no particles, painterly."
- Notes. The shard must read as paper, not crystal. Texture: matte, with a faint torn edge.
F23 — Mimi tears the empty page (02:44 – 02:50)
- Composition. Top-down on the journal. Mimi's paw turns to the very last page — the only blank one.
- Action. A slow, careful tear along the perforation.
- Lighting & palette. Cream paper, graphite shadows from previous pages bleeding through faintly.
- Sound cue. Silence under the chord — the tear is mimed. Even the chord briefly thins to honor the gesture.
- AI-gen prompt. "Top-down voxel insert of bunny paws tearing a single blank page from a journal along a perforation, slow careful motion, cream paper, painterly."
- Notes. The tear takes longer than feels right. Stretch it.
F24 — Hand-off (02:50 – 02:54)
- Composition. Two-shot, intimate. Mimi extends the page toward Dzino with both paws. He receives with both hands.
- Action. No words. No nod. Just the hand-off. Eyes meet for half a beat.
- Lighting & palette. The page is the brightest object. Their faces softened by it.
- Sound cue. Chord-with-rest. Sustains.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel bunny handing a single torn blank page to an indigo character with both paws, intimate twilight two-shot, no words, painterly."
- Notes. Block this so the page is centered between them — the gift is the geometry.
F25 — Dzino folds the page (02:54 – 02:58)
- Composition. Tight on Dzino's hands. The page in his lap.
- Action. Three folds, slow: half, half, half. The folded square is small enough to tuck near the chest-shard.
- Lighting & palette. Cream on indigo on violet.
- Sound cue. Folds make no sound. The chord-with-rest sustains.
- AI-gen prompt. "Tight voxel close-up of indigo hands folding a cream page into a small square in three slow folds, painterly stillness."
- Notes. The folds are the second visible motion from Dzino himself. The folds are care.
F26 — Tucking the fold (02:58 – 03:02)
- Composition. Slight pull-back. He tucks the folded page against his chest, just beside the shard's notch.
- Action. Tuck. Pat. Rest his hand there for a beat.
- Lighting & palette. Same.
- Sound cue. Chord-with-rest sustains.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel indigo character tucking a folded cream page into chest beside a paper-shaped shard, soft pat, twilight violet, painterly."
- Notes. This is the pact. Don't underline it.
F27 — The bow (03:02 – 03:06)
- Composition. Two-shot, profile, both seated. Dzino bows his head to Mimi. Mimi returns it.
- Action. Two bows. Slow. Equal. Neither smiles. Neither speaks.
- Lighting & palette. Same.
- Sound cue. Chord-with-rest.
- AI-gen prompt. "Two voxel characters bowing heads to each other in equal silent thanks, seated on moss beneath a still owl, painterly twilight."
- Notes. Mimi's bow is shyer. Hers comes a hair after his. That timing is the relationship.
F28 — Standing (03:06 – 03:11)
- Composition. Wide. Dzino stands. Mimi stays seated, journal still in her lap, owl above her unchanged.
- Action. Dzino rises in one slow movement. The grove does not register it. Not a leaf shifts.
- Lighting & palette. Same. Dzino's silhouette is now the only vertical thing other than the trees.
- Sound cue. Chord-with-rest, slightly fuller as he stands — the rest is now load-bearing in the chord.
- AI-gen prompt. "Voxel indigo character standing slowly in a still twilight grove, bunny remaining seated with journal, owl unchanged, painterly Ghibli stillness."
- Notes. No leaves move. Test against the animator's instinct to add atmosphere — and reject the atmosphere.
F29 — Walk-out, grove unmoved (03:11 – 03:18)
- Composition. Long, low pull-back. Dzino walks out of frame to screen-left. Camera retreats.
- Action. Five steps. The frozen leaves stay frozen. The dew drop from F04 is visible again in the deep distance, still suspended. The spiderweb still still.
- Lighting & palette. Twilight blue-violet, moss-green; Dzino's small indigo body the only motion in a vast still life.
- Sound cue. Chord-with-rest sustains, fading.
- AI-gen prompt. "Long pull-back of voxel indigo character walking out of a frozen twilight grove, leaves still suspended mid-fall, dew drop suspended in distance, no atmospheric motion, painterly Ghibli."
- Notes. Proof shot of the episode's thesis — even Dzino's leaving does not disturb the stillness.
F30 — Mimi alone, owl above (03:18 – 03:30)
- Composition. Static wide. Mimi seated, journal in lap, the empty space beside her where Dzino sat. The owl above. The grove around. Hold.
- Action. None for nine full seconds. On the very last beat, Mimi closes her journal — soundlessly. The owl blinks once. End.
- Lighting & palette. Twilight deepens by a half-stop.
- Sound cue. Chord-with-rest fades to silence two seconds before picture-out. The episode ends in silence, as it began. The rest is the whole point.
- AI-gen prompt. "Static wide of a bunny seated with a closed journal beneath a still owl, twilight grove unchanged, no motion, painterly Ghibli ending shot."
- Notes. Cut to black on silence. No title card sound. No sting.
Style anchors needed
Hand-paint these plates before any AI-gen pass. Without them the model will hallucinate motion into the grove and break the premise.
- Twilight grove plate — master environment, lit at three depths (foreground moss, midground trunks, background canopy), all in the locked palette. One plate, no variations.
- Frozen-fall detail plate — three macro inserts: 45° leaf, still spiderweb, suspended dew. Photographed lighting reference, not painted — we want viewers to think it might be a still photo.
- Owl character sheet — front, three-quarter, profile; eyes-open, eyes-closed, mid-blink. Bioluminescent eye glow specified by hex and intensity.
- Mimi character sheet — front, three-quarter, profile; cross-legged seated pose; journal-open pose; shh-gesture pose; apologetic-look pose. Pencil-behind-ear is canon.
- Journal pages plate — three filled pages (dots/dashes, increasingly desperate handwriting) photographed flat, plus the single blank page. The blank page is the shard — its proportions match the shard's exactly.
- Empty-page shard plate — the rectangle alone, in cream, on violet, matte-paper texture, faint torn edge. No glow, no particles. Reference for the comp team to refuse any temptation to add VFX.
- Dzino chest-glow plate — chord-glow with seven voices versus seven-and-a-rest. The "rest" rendered as a small geometric hollow inside the cream glow. Lock this language now; it returns in E12.
Motion spec (this episode only). Wind: none. Ambient particles: none. Foliage idle: none, even canopy. Character idle: minimum — Dzino's only idle is breath; Mimi's an occasional ear-twitch; the owl's the deliberate blink. Camera: locked or extremely slow push/pull. No handheld, no float.
Sound spec (this episode only). 00:00 – 01:30 — silence; project file should literally have a muted master, not "low ambient." 01:30 onward — chord only; no diegetic sound, no Foley. The grove makes no sound and never has. The eighth voice is and always will be a rest — a measured silence, scored as a notated rest, not as an unplayed note. Deliver session stems with the rest flagged so future re-scorers don't "fix" it. The subtitle line "What do you not need to say?" is never voiced in any locale, ever.
Continuity into E09. The chord that walks out of this grove is seven-voices-and-a-rest. E09 opens with a bass drop that fills the rest with a tone for the first time, and that contrast is the hook of the next episode. Don't spoil it here — leave the rest alone.
